Label Conditions: Both superb: yes another from that barely played collection. Highly attractive and fresh looking, clearly barely even handled or played, with light and very ligh, faint spindle marks on each side.

Cat Number: S 63815.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 142 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce with the original laminated front cover and try finding a much better record than this – I copy I can proudly state that plays ‘perfectly’.

Brief Info: Debut album that started this incredible guitarists album career and Santana were pioneers of Afro-Latin rock. Heavy on percussion and fiery electric guitar this has moments of sheer brilliance and was carried still further on the critically acclaimed next few albums which were more commercially successful. This is an exceptional copy and includes the original and much rarer laminated cover. The back is highly wear-prone but this has minimal traces of any wear. The record looks fantastic, clearly little played and boasts immaculate sound with no blemishes at all. It’s a great copy for the connoisseur collector and will prove immensely difficult to find like this again.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderately high, the back being very wear-prone.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ A single format and importantly, laminated on the front and this wraps around the spine on to the back for approx quarter of an inch. Later copies omitted this laminate. Made in England by the Upton Printing Group.

Lamination: Little short of factory-fresh and comes close to looking new. Ultra shiny and crystal clear and fully adhered with no lifting of blisters - always great to state this. Struggling to even find a crease worthy of note, just a couple of fine hairline types on the spine edge. As smooth as glass and looking fantastic. One small blemish that stops the front getting a Mint(-) grading: a fine vertical scuff near the top. This looks like a minor manufacture blemish, it has low visibility but present nonetheless. Barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling. The supremely detailed lion's head looks magnificent and notice in close-up the faces in the design. The right edge sees the laminate end short of full width, but even the exposed white strip has no darkening or grime-line formation. Beautiful line artwork with immense detail all bought to maximum effect with the original laminate.

Cover Back: Immensely wear-prone and seldom seen looking this nice. Very mild traces of surface rubs being critical and the odd minor surface mark or tiny crease. Still very black too, this is often seen faded. The lack of ringwear is a bonus.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: A couple of tiny surface chips, again being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is practically as manufactured and that is immaculate: Solid, straight, uncompressed, then ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate (and even this retains fine shine).

Corners: All in great shape with barely any traces of wear, all retain superb shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A highly attractive laminated version of this famous vintage CBS cover. It’s sure to please most collectors, however if the small cover scuff is an issue, please do not bid.

The Inner: EX+ and in very fine condition. Clean, slightly darkened with age with no tears or splits, flipback constructed but made with thin paper so scarcely found with so few creases or ruffling. A very nice attractive, only slightly aged inner that’s just right for its vintage.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Very tempted to grade Mint, this is truly immaculate and a really solidily pressed first issue. A superb visual copy that again is reference standard, super clean, shiny, intense black, it truly has that ‘just pressed’ look. A copy barely even run-in in vinyl terms and plays as good as it looks. Undergraded at Mint(-) and visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This supreme record plays up to its visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. One for the sound connoisseur and audiophile collector, this heavy Santana album excelled on my system and was a pleasure from beginning to end. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will even match this first pressed example I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and fully focused and clear, I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this exceptional record. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better for ultimate sound quality and wonderful good looks - and the record is unreservedly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
