Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces ultra light, fine and faint and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A very impressive heavy pressing and way above average. Later examples were much thinner.

Brief Info: Album number four for the Latin Rock band led by the virtuoso guitarist Carlos Santana. After they came to the public’s attention via the Woodstock Festival, they rarely looked back. This one less commercial than previous with a more jazz-orientated sound and several band member changes. Many consider it one of Santana’s greatest ever and it sold well even though it had no hit singles. This a lovely early UK copy with a hardly played thick heavyweight record that offers fantastic sound – these considerably harder to find than subsequent pressings.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with the outside faces smooth and matt. The inside gatefold has textured surfaces which is something of a role reversal over most dual surface covers, most texturing appears outside. Printed and made in England by Shorewood and this has the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A few light marks and a couple or three tiny edge chips. Overall clean and attractive with a fine degree of freshness retained with minimal rubbing and barely any creasing.

Cover Back: The back is similar with a gentle rim rub from the much thicker than average record. Barely any hint of inkloss and again, hardly any creasing.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb with deep rich colour and unrubbed textured surfaces.

Top Edges: The odd small chip but barely any rubbing and both straight.

Bottom Edges: Some gentle rubbing on the back, a little patchy. The front has hardly any at all, again both straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded near square, so the edges meet up quite closely together and just a little off parallel. The text is present and unworn, but fine and not that easy to see against the dark colour of the spine, but that is normal and it is certainly there. Any rubbing to the surface or folds is very light and little with any rubbing or fading very light indeed.

Corners: Mainly small tip rubs with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite wear-prone 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better with an early heavyweight record inside. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined CBS promotional inner they called ‘The Inner Sleeve’ (II). Made with very thin paper and seldom seen without edge splits or creasing. This one has neither and has aged little, all strong indication the record has been little used.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks ultra light and faint as seen very critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive heavyweight record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
