Secretly Sarcofago's most forward-thinking album since I.N.R.I.. Now, this is pure speculation, but coming off the vaguely more 'normal' death/thrash of 1991's The Laws of Scourge and realizing that no, the band were never going to achieve Sepultura's superstar status, combined with the fact that second wave black metal was in full motherfuckin' swing by now, I think it was enough to push Sarcofago back to their ultra-nasty, deathened black metal grave.
Reduced to a pair, with one "Dead Zone" handling keys and drum machine duties (he was never an official Sarcofago member), "Hate" is a divisive album, sure, but if the novelty of a rapid-fire drum machine turns you on ~ giving the proceedings this tinge of an industrial metal feel ~ plus the band's requisite boneheaded, shock value lyrics & song titles, and a newfound sense of pure eeeeviiiiiil, you'll find there's lots to like here.
Crushing, doomy, or even groovy moments in the likes of "The God's Faeces," "Orgy of Flies" and "Anal Vomit" serve well to break up the 100 mile an hour onslaught, giving these songs even more character.
