Label/Format: Decca, original unboxed format with matt, gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny and faint, hardly any with no wear around the hole area. This always the best news for mono records.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: This record has a small edge warp, which caused some movement on one small area of rotation. It proved no issue for my Linn LP12/Ittok II tone arm and Ortofon cartridge tracking at 2 grams. I even tested it further by tracking at 1.7 grams and still no problem. Barely any sound was heard when the music areas began, any movement sound traces very faint. The tracking for this could potentially be a small risk for budget turntables or those that use a cartridge with its body very close to the record. But most medium to high-end turntables should have no problems. On my system, this record plays fine and offers very clean and impressive mono sound. However, if anyone is worried about tracking a small, but moderate edge warp, please do not bid.

Brief Info: The fourth album from this London blues rock band. They became particularly popular in the United States, but their albums sold far less well in the UK. Side one is new studio material, the second side was recorded live at The Cooks Ferry Inn, Edmonton, London on Monday 12 May 1969. This a very fine mono example that appears hardly played. As stated further up, it does have a moderate, but small edge warp, but plays absolutely fine on my LP12 Sondek. Please read the ‘Warp’ paragraph above for more details.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine. The main back panel is matt and smooth and includes the mono/stereo hole that is filled with the colour-coded inner sleeve (included as seen), these appeared in 1969. Red denoted a mono copy, blue a stereo, as-seen, this is a much rarer mono original. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and only light dulling seen under light around the rim area. Very little creasing, any present gentle and light, this surface has aged little.

Cover Back: The unprotected white back has lightly aged with some mainly light toning/small gentle stain near the edges. No rubbing, any creasing little and again light, the peep-hole crisp and undamaged as seen in close-up. Any rim impression light near the left edge.

Top & Bottom Edges: A gentle hint of bowing, that difficult to avoid on vintage Clarifoil laminated covers. Both surfaces smooth and hardly worn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly quite sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, lightly bowed with any compression patchy andn quite light. A light scuff near the bottom, all text unworn under the solid laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs mainly quite small with minimal creasing. Very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this vintage late 1969’s cover. The front especially is beautiful, the back with only mild hints of age. So just enough to politely remind of its true vintage and it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better, it does have creasing to the lower corners, but little else to fault. A Decca red inner to fill the main cover peep-hole to denote a mono record inside. This a solid polylined inner that is still clean and fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the 10-69 (October 1969) date-code and is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. This a very late mono record by Decca standards.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better visually, but it does have the small, but moderate edge warp as clearly described above. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces or marks few, mostly very ligh, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality blues album mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Again I mention the small warp near the beginning. It has minimal sound at all when the music plays and tracking prove no problem for my LP12/Ittok/Ortofon set up – a quite high-end turntable that will track almost anything. I could a little tricky for budget turntables/arms or those that track at very low weights, but I honestly feel few respectable turntables will have any problem. In terms of sound, it plays with strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the warp with negligible sound when the music plays. In terms of sound quality and lack of scratches etc, it could prove difficult to find much better. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a stereo system. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Little at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality blues album. It will prove difficult to find significantly better, but not for purists due to the small warp. So again, if you have any doubts, please do not bid.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
