Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, mainly fine and quite faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These only small and confined to the inner circle ring and only really showing under angled light. The main cover has a little wear, but the record itself is in super-shape and plays with fantastic clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: With a largely new line-up, this was Savoy Brown’s second album. A blues-orientated band in a similar mould to John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers, but their albums are far harder to find. Chris Youlden took over from Brice Portius on vocals, and much of the material written him and ever-present guitarist Kim Simmonds. This one of their most prized albums and this record looks very modestly played and offers superb clean sound.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth, matt and unprotected. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker. Includes the original inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a fine shine and clarity with a decent freshness. Any dulling only mild and light as seen viewed under angled light. There is a fairly fine spine edge lift – hardly uncommon with Clarifoil that tends to shrink more than other types – but no peeling. The spine edge itself has some fine cracking and a couple of fine splits on the actual spine surface, this the main reason for the lower grading, but the general lack of creasing is a positive. A moderate half inch rub on the bottom right corner and odd small edge chip. However, the main graphic looks superb as seen in close-up, this has very little to fault with any surface blemishes ultra fine and faint as seen critically again under light. So a front that has aged a little but still quite attractive.

Cover Back: The back has faired well with any grubbiness to the predominately white surface mild and very light. Any creasing the same, few and very fine indeed and the surface itself has minimal traces of marks or wear. Fine edge creasing, mainly to the spine edge, but for a 46-year-old unprotected back, this still looks quite impressive.

Top Edge: Neat, straight with little wear at all.

Bottom Edge: One small surface chip and the bottom corner area rubbed as mentioned further up. Still solid and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The fine front non-laminated strip still present with just a little fine and tiny chipping to the top edge.

Spine and Text: Quite straight with any compression modest, but this is not so solid as it has several creases that have finely broken the surface in places. The text is still all present as is the laminate itself, but the cracking, although looking fine, has made the spine far less robust, thus the cover needs to be handled a little more carefully to avoid bending.

Corners: All corners have rubbed being fairly light to near moderate. The bottom right is heavier but not too big at around half an inch.

Cover Summary: Still an attractive cover with most of any wear on the spine surface and corners, so not for the more discerning, but this is a scarce one, and for sure it will please many slightly less demanding collectors. The most important factor always has to be the record, and in that respect, this copy really delivers.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. A vintage polylined Decca blue inner for stereo records. A little aged with the usual darkening of the edge seam adhesive and gentle surface rubbing near the edges. One fine top entrance edge split I neatly repaired to reduce the risk of it catching and widening in the future. Minimal creasing and all the closed edges unsplit with no repairs required.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or better, probably deserving a (+). A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, fine and faint as seen far more critically under bright angled light. No penetrating ‘needle’ marks and this plays with lovely clean sound throughout. Visually a super, and arguably rarer stereo record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality vintage blues album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca – for me, the very best UK manufacturer of top quality records. Few available copies will outperform this very early -1W/-1W pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has not been abused on vintage record players of the distant past. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, only the second copy of this one I have ever had. The record especially could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
