Welcome! Here is a first UK press of Savoy Brown Shake Down (Decca SKL 4883). At the time of this 1967 album, the group was still called Savoy Brown Blues Band, with a lineup of Kim Simmonds, Brice Portius, Martin Stone, Ray Chappell, and Leo Mannings. Pianist Bob Hall is present as well.

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Side 1: ZAL-7887-IW; the mother/stamper is 31 M. (Note: the 3 is above the 1.) The UK tax code JT appears in the runoff grooves as well.

Side 2: ZAL-7888-IW; the mother/stamper is 1 G. As with Side 1, JT appears in the runoff grooves.

Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: The single sleeve grades VG+, really almost Excellent-. It is signed “Printed in England by Robert Stace.” The laminated front is very presentable, with some disturbance at the upper right corner, minor wear to the other corners, and scattered laminate wrinkles. The unlaminated white back is slightly soiled, really not too bad for an album that is 44 years old. The same wear/disturbance to the upper right corner of the front is seen to the upper left of the back. As is often seen, a thin line of discoloration runs all the way down along the edge where the lamination ends, on both the front (JUST inside of the edge where the record is inserted) and on the back (where the lamination wraparound ends). The laminated spine reveals “pinched” ends, correct for a sleeve of this vintage, and is in fine condition. The edge where the record is inserted has only slight wear.

Vinyl: The vinyl grades VG. Visually, the vinyl appears pristine, without even any hairlines. However, minor background crackling is present for much of both sides, so I will be conservative with the grading.

Labels: The unboxed Decca labels are strong, with average spindle tracking on both labels.

Inner Sleeve: This album has a near mint condition plain white plastic-lined inner sleeve; this does the job but, alas, it is not the original inner.

And, in the end: Savoy Brown were a straight-ahead blues band at the time of their debut album, hence their name, and Shake Down exemplifies the sound of the British Blues boom. Here is your chance to own an unboxed Decca UK stereo press of this album! Please e-mail me with any questions.
