Description
SAX 2441 Mahler Symphony No. 4 Schwarzkopf/Philharmonia/Klemperer
Label: Blue/Silver
Condition: Near Mint
Rare, gorgeous SAX Blue/Silver Mahler 4 with Schwarzkopf and Klemperer! It is easy to forget that Klemperer was once the Bauhaus-boiler-suited, round-black-plastic-Futurist-bespectled bad boy of the modernist Kroll Opera, champion of Berg and Webern and Bartok, who had to run to the US early in the 30's to escape Nazi wrath as the exponent of Boshevism and decadence in the music & arts! He, Bruno Walter and Megelberg were, post-war, the last of a line of Jewish musicians who had grown up with Mahler as the great master of the new Viennese tradition, the father of Schonberg, Berg and Krenek. While Walter was more traditional and subjective in his approach, Klemperer was more modern and objective, his eye more or the musical Urtext rather than the spiritual Urlicht! Nevertheless, with the Philharmonia (in 2 & 4) and the New Philaharmonia (in 7 and 9) he delivered a series of Mahler performances that in many ways have been the benchmark of excellence for half a century. That he did at least part of this after a stroke that would have killed many a lesser man, in his 70's, is as much a tribute to the indomitable spirit of a great human being in the face of almost insurmountable difficulties as is the music of Mahler itself...
