We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over 18,000 positive feedback. We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Looking for something really different, highly creative and intense? Most likely you've found your challenge... Serene and flowing with sudden off the cliff multi-facet vocal expansions, one Chatherine Riberio, along with her psychedelic prog/psych band ALPS, whom made some very worthy albums at the turn of 1970.
Although still very obscure and unknown to most, their albums from the early '70s are adorned with expressive adventurous excursions, a deep dive into the hip psychedelic underbelly ...
No better record is the group peaking 1972 third album, housed in an attractive laminated gatefold, issued only in France on the Philips label.
The first three records ('70, '71 & '72) by the French-Portuguese singer Catherine Ribeiro and her inventive, psychedelic backing band Alpes are the types of elusive record-collector gems that feel like transmissions from another world.
You hear this unearthly voice emerging from the speakers. You listen to the wild, visionary music accompanying it. Suddenly you need to know everything about this compelling group.
Ask Ribeiro, and you won’t find many answers; “It was an immense pile of waste and solitude,” is how she summarizes her formative years. In her '90s memoir, L’Enfance, Ribeiro dives deeper. She was born in Lyon, France during wartime. Her brother died as an infant. She spent an inordinate amount of her youth hiding in the darkness of a makeshift bomb cellar. Before she immersed herself in music, Ribeiro was an actor, appearing in Jean Luc Godard’s 1963 anti-war film Les Carabiniers. In her most memorable scene, she watches her soldier husband display a series of surreal, beatific postcards from the war. The message was simple: Look how we suppress and miscast the brutality of our lives; look how we reenact that violence on others. Ribeiro swore to never make this mistake in her art.
With Alpes, Ribeiro filtered nihilism, anger, and empathy into triumphant, multi-layered collages, galloping and stuttering as though the acid had kicked in midway through a hike at sunrise. “Peace to those who howl because they see clearly,” goes one of her iconic lyrics. Ribeiro does just that, but her voice is such a versatile instrument that it cannot be limited to one mission. She laughs, she caws, she screams, she mourns, she barks, she brays. She sings about suicide, about motherhood and madness, about doomed affairs between Eastern European women and politicians from imagined countries. The music—which calcified into the sound of an identifiable avant-garde-leaning psych-progressive band throughout her LPs—touches on the swirl of 1960s rock and the theatrical swell of early 1970s prog, stretching both genres to their most impressionistic extremes. As a group, Alpes can sound eerily beautiful or demonically possessed, sometimes whip-lashing between those modes as if satirizing the entire scope of rock music.
