Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. Because of that dedication, there should be no need to open a resolution dispute before working with us.  Please keep in mind, we would prefer to continue to provide you the opportunity to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable.  We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over 18,000 positive feedback.   We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. Thank you for your interest and support.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SHIPPING:   USA ~ 1 LP = $4.00 Media Priority rates vary by area; please inquire.   All Canadian and Overseas shipping ~ Please inquire about rates. • ROKY ERICKSON & THE ALIENS

  • ..|/\|...............................................|/\|..
  • UK - C.B.S -

  • TOP COPY
  • includes the far-out lyrics (insert)
  1. Hard to find ...this, from 40 years past, is the first pressing of ROKY ERICKSON'S return to LP-vinyl since his late sixties work with the 13th Floor Elevators.

  2. What can one say about this album? Every song is a riot of it's own.
  3. On entirely a different trip from 13 years before Roky's acid visions in the 13th Floor Elevators. What you get here is southern-fried raw & hard horror rock with a commanding vocal delivery.

  4. This is an album so crammed with demons, devils, zombies, werewolves and ghosts that in many senses listening to it feels like a personal shedding for Erickson; an expelling; a screaming; an unleashing of all that hides within him – essentially an exorcism. However, despite his mental fragility during the making of the album, it’s an incredibly accomplished collection of songs. The song writing, in an oddly classically rock structured way, with much of the psychedelic sounds long gone, borders on the sublime, and his voice still screeches with a pain and energy that could only be Roky. Aided by the superb production of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Stu Cook, the album swells and soars

  5. At the time of its release, Erickson had a few years prior been out of Rusk Sate Hospital for the Criminally Insane - where he had been sent as part of a plea deal to avoid prison for drug possession - for about eight years. His time at Rusk included electroshock therapy and Thorazine treatments. While this was not good for his mental state, it must be noted that all blame cannot be placed at the feet of the cops and doctors. From as early as 1968, Roky was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia as a means of explaining erratic behavior that went back even more into his past. Thus, whether caused by legal or illegal drugs; questionable medical treatments; inherent mental problems or something else; it's safe to say that Roky Erickson had a shaky hold on reality.

All this is mentioned to provide a context to discuss this album, which - in the absurdist politically-correct speak of the 21st Century - would carry a label warning some would find the material continued within "disturbing." The lyrics are painted on canvas that is rock `n' roll rather than the psyche-trippings of the Elevators; there's no noodling here, no extended solos. Instead it's bone crunching rock with ex-Cold Sun member Billy Miller replicating the crazy jug sounds of the Elevators on auto-harp and lyrically the characters on this album are denizens of the silver screen at best.

Knowing Erickson's history, it's easy to write off this album as shock rock. When one listens to the cuts on this album, it must be done with the understanding that, in all likelihood, Roky was speaking of events and creatures he believed were real. From this perspective, talk of satanic symbols (`Two-Headed Dog' and `I think of Demons') and the undead ('I Walked With a Zombie' - a song that is literally all chorus and no verse - and `Night of the Vampire') shouldn't be seen as theater. In point of fact, Roky was less Alice Cooper and more the person with whom you avoid eye contact on a bus or on the street. And, nowhere is this descent into insanity - replete with its implied cruelty on the part of those expected to have been of help to him - more apparent and obvious than in the last cut; one of two deleted from the original release, Listening to `Bloody Hammer' is an audio version of what Olivia DeHavilland's character experienced in the movie `The Snake Pit.' However, the similarity ended there - at least at that point in time - because the movie had a happy ending.
