ARTIST / TITLE / LABEL:   Knight's Past   /  Nights Passed  /    record LP   /  self-released, private pressing; catalog #KP 101  /  sealed, never opened, completely unflawed, looks like it was produced yesterday!

Below are excerpts from our correspondence with Stephen Wolf, Professor at Indiana State University, who is credited with playing bass on the album (and saxophones on the track “Fire Island”).

Wrote Steve: 

“This band was pretty much Mark Dailey's vehicle for his music.  Mark was influenced by the music of his time, the 70's, leaning toward jazz-fusion with a large influence by Zappa (although we were not as technically proficient as FZ's bands).  The band (at least during its configuration in 1983-1984 West Lafayette/Purdue University), was mostly a studio band.  However, when we played out we played Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd,  Rush, Beatles… and originals.

“Mark was not a big fan of early 80's new music.  Although traces of this band may be still in the archives of http://musicalfamilytree.com which primarily has documented the Indiana new music scene.

“The record was recorded at Zounds studio (Rick Thomas' basement studio, 1/2 inch 8 track, in West Lafayette right near Purdue).  Rick's studio was a hotbed for local recording back then, the most well know band were Purdue's original punk band "Dow Jones and the Industrials" as well as a bunch of bands spawned by the punk/new wave scene at that time (best recorded on an Indiana compilation "Red Snerts.”) 

“I recorded with my other band, "The Sound", later named East of Eden (not the Boston one).  We went on to some minor regional notoriety.  

“Mark moved to Boston to pursue a career in music in the late 80's.  I recorded more music with him in the early 90's on one of his trips back to Indiana.  The most memorable thing about these recordings was that we collaborated with a remarkable guitarist Mike Kelsey (who is very good, and regionally still popular).   

“I've been trying to find out where Mark is these days.  I do know the drummer John Ehresman passed.  His family owns a West Lafayette institution, The XXX (burger joint). But Mark seems to be off the grid.  Jeff Fessler is a Prof. at the University of Michigan.”
