Sex Pistols : The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle A1 / B1 1st Press 1980 + Poster

On offer here is the one disc version of this album which includes the relatively rare and very collectable large poster.  The majority of the album plays with stunning quality and it's only the first track that plays with some interference as detailed below.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is superb on all the other tracks!

The cover is in excellent condition overall with only some wear on the edges and corners.  The 'INCLUDES FREE POSTER' sticker is still attached to the front as is the '£3.99 SPECIAL PRICE' sticker.  The poster itself is in superb condition with only a small pinhole in each corner.  It is unmarked and the colours are still strong and bright.  It also includes the 12" insert which is a bonus in a way as it is the one that was included with the double album version.  The original inner sleeve is also in excellent condition.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition overall and still has a very strong glossy sheen.  The only negative is one small scratch on S1 resulting in the interference as detailed below.  Aside from that the record is so clean with no marks and only a small number of very faint hairlines.  The labels are super clean with very little spindle wear.

Play grading  

A fair amount of the 'God Save The Queen Symphony' with the vocal from Malcolm McLaren does play with a click once per revolution but only 6 or 7 towards the end are what you call loud and intrusive and many are relatively quiet.  The final third of the 'track' plays very clearly with barely any intrusion.  As this is a 'spoken' number the clicks kind of don't get in the way too much so if you can accept this then it's not a problem!  There is no background static either which is good news.  The opening two thirds grade as VG- and the final third as Near Mint

The intro on 'The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle' plays with supreme power and depth and it continues in the same way.  Nothing wrong with the clarity here, there is no intrusion on the audio and it grades as Mint- from start to finish.

A shift in gear and 'You Need Hands' plays with STUNNING clarity and no actual interference.  There are only a handful of very quiet static ticks.  An example of this clarity is during the super quiet mid instrumental which has only a couple of mega quiet statics.  I am sure many would grade this track as Mint but I will say Near Mint just to play it safe :-)

'Silly Thing' is just superb!  It plays with phenomenal power and depth throughout with zero background.  In essence it plays 'as new' with a sonic quality that is breath-taking.  It demands to be turned up to max and you can do so without fear of distortion.  This is Mint in every way.

The percussive intro on 'Lonely Boy' is faultless and the opening vocal is just as strong.  From then on it plays with great power although I would say the clarity isn't quite on the same level as the previous track.  Perhaps that's because we are approaching the end of the side.  Near Mint

In saying that the final track 'Something Else' does play very clearly with no intrusion.  Very impressive audio here and Mint- is deserved.

'Rock Around The Clock' on S2 plays perfectly with no issues.  No ticks, clicks etc just pure Mint audio from start to finish.

The intro on 'C'mon Everybody' has no background and from then on plays with tremendous clarity and power.  The sonic quality is actually very strong - the vocal from Vicious is very high in the mix and the guitar very powerful and clear.  Mint

The intro on 'Who Killed Bambi' again has no intrusion and 'vocal' throughout is just as clean.  The clarity of sound and there are only 3/4 very quiet dust ticks.  Mint

'No One Is Innocent' plays with unrivalled power and depth and again there is no interference.  No distortion and another Mint track.

'L'Anarchie Pour Le Uk' is equal to that and plays with 'controlled' power and vitriol throughout!  It could not play any better and again Mint is deserved.

The intro on 'My Way' is close to perfect with only a small number of barely audible dust ticks.  The first vocal from Vicious is just as good and as the volume increases the playback is very strong and deep and there is no distortion on the top end.  It continues in the same precise way and for a final track the sonic quality is very impressive.  There are no clicks or pops and it ends the album on a high with Mint- audio.

In summary this very collectable plays with superb audio apart from the first track as described above.  A little frustrating obviously but it's not as if it's a 'musical' and you can still hear McClaren's voice perfectly.  The rest of the album plays with stunning clarity, power and depth and no other interference.

The Cover, Poster, Insert & Inner Sleeve

The only issue with the cover is some rubbing on the edges and corners with a little more on the two right hand corners.  Apart from that it is very clean and the front and back cover are unmarked and it has the two original stickers on the front.  The spine is also in great shape with hardly any wear, just a 3/4 tiny specks and minimal wear on the corners and the opening edge again has only minimal handling wear.

The classic large poster is in superb condition with no marking or creasing and has just one small pinhole in each corner.

The original 12" insert is unmarked and has only a little creasing.  The plain white die-cut inner is very clean with no marking or side splits and again just has some creasing.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
