Wilderness America -- A Celebration of the Land LP
Original 197? US private pressing on no label (catalog # EC 212), with lyric/photo innersleeve.Obscure and eclectic jazz/prog/rock/funk/soul/folk/electronic/avant-garde compilation, recorded in San Francisco, probably in the mid 1970's. Musicians include guitarist Lee Ritenour (listed as "Lee Retenoir"), jazz drummer Harvey Mason, gospel singer Walter Hawkins, jazz pianist Mike Melvoin, progressive guitarist Peter Maunu (later of Group 87), drummer Gaylord Birch (of 70's funk band Graham Central Station), David Riordan, Peter Scott, Tom Salisbury (from the San Fran psych rock/jazz/folk/avant-garde band Lamb) and the mysterious new age/electronic music pioneer IASOS.
The GREAT funky track "Metropolis" sung by the late Walter Hawkins is an incredibly catchy funk/soul number with a strong Curtis Mayfield/Marvin Gaye vibe. Or, as waxidermy puts it: "the real standout track has full on Marin County slip-on loafers harbor cruising Marvin Gaye tackling the issues moves. Who says saving the environment can't be funky?" From the liner notes: "Wilderness America/A Celebration of the Land, is a musical exploration of our place within the cycle of living things. All compositions were specially commissioned for this album and blended with natural sounds recorded in the wild." CONDITION: Cover NM / Vinyl NM -- close to new, still in shrinkwrap, vinyl is near pristine. Graded conservatively using Goldmine standards [G / G+ / VG / VG+ / NM / ]grade only used if record is brand new.
