Here for auction is a lovely example of the debut studio album by DEEP PURPLE titled “SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE”, Catalogue Number PMC 7055. This is an ultra rare 1968 UK MONO 1st PRESSING on the YELLOW & BLACK PARLOPHONE RECORD LABEL, with a 1st ISSUE “PATENTS PENDING” GARROD & LOFTHOUSE LTD FRONT-LAMINATED FLIPBACK SLEEVE. [The Parlophone labels have “SOLD IN U.K…” text. The matrix numbers and stampers are XEX 689-1 1 R and XEX 690-1 1 R, making this a very early presing].
The sleeve is in VG condition (strictly graded) with just light wear and a few creases. The front cover has a 5cm scuff line on the left side near the spine. There is a name written inside the D of “SHADES” on the back cover. There are no rips, splits or any other serious faults. Overall it’s a very presentable sleeve.
The top quality Parlophone record is in VG+ condition. It retains a lovely deep shine and sits perfectly flat on the turntable. Both sides display only a few light surface marks under bright light. These are only superficial and do not cause any audio problems (no repeat pops/clicks). The Y&B Parlophone labels are unmarked with only a moderate number of spindle traces near the centres. The mono mix is very different to that of the stereo. Playback is clear and vibrant with wonderful period mono tone. Both sides play to a very high standard with barely any deterioration in sound quality and only a very low level of unwanted noise (just a touch of light background surface sound in places which is never intrusive and does not interfere with the enjoyment of the music). I think that it will be very difficult to find a significantly better-playing mono 1st press copy of this iconic album.
The original white poly-lined inner sleeve has some creases and age discoloration. It also has “tony’s record” drawn in red and yellow pen on the reverse. The “R.S. 11-68” date text is printed in the bottom right corner.
Overall this is a lovely 1st press mono copy which plays to a very high standard throughout.
GRADINGS
The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega P5 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:
· MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.
· EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.
· VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve.
PACKAGING
LPs are packaged with care and well protected to ensure that they arrive safely in the same condition as they leave me. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
