Original 1985 NZ release on Flying Nun Records (NEW ZEALAND) (catalog # CJ001, black labels with textured rim), in Picture Sleeve.Simply stunning... two raw slices of shimmering, heartbreaking New Zealand pop music from Shayne Carter (Bored Games, Dimmer, The Doublehappys, Lame & Sorry, Straitjacket Fits, The Weeds) + Peter Jefferies (2 Foot Flame, Cyclops, Dimmer, Mecca Normal, Nocturnal Projections, Plagal Grind, This Kind Of Punishment.)
As someone rightly said on Public Address: "Stark, bleak, brilliant. And listen to that drum track. Heard Carter achieved the distant echo effect by simply moving to the back of the hall where he was recording and screaming the lyrics (nice story if it's true)."
This is the original pressing dated 1985, black labels with the catalog # CJ001. (It appears Flying Nun also released a later pressing in 1986 or later with the catalog # FNCJ001... but this record here is the original pressing clearly dated 1985.)
rateyourmusic Review: 'Randolph's Going Home' is an intensely personal song about Shayne Carter's ex band mate Wayne Elsey who was tragically killed in a train accident. Lyrically haunting, vocally like John Lennon stuck in a reverb chamber, and musically a linear dot connecting The Doublehappys to The Straitjacket Fits.The B side is a little odder with layered vocals, and more conventionally dark and cynical lyrics delivered by both Jefferies and Carter.
Shayne Carter's cynical, dark vocal style that became distinctive in Straitjacket Fits for its contrast with Andrew Brough is in full flight here - this is by no means some form of pre-Straitjacket Fits misdirected musical attempt without Carter's signature style. His guitar playing really defines the mood of the songs and provides as much atmosphere as the limitations of the technology permit. The b-side holds its own against the a-side and features some particularly cynical lyrics that perfectly suit Carter's vocals, such as "welcome to the real world, isn't it disgusting?"
This release, despite its brevity, is a nice glance at a darker side of the early Dunedin Sound.
CONDITION: Cover VG+ / Vinyl VG++ cover has light ringwear, original glued seams are all intact; vinyl is excellent, just some light surface scuffing, nothing major. Graded conservatively using Goldmine standards [G / G+ / VG / VG+ / NM / ]grade only used if record is brand new.
