This is one of the most exciting Rocking records ever released on IKON! Both songs are featured on the 2CD "The IKON Records Story" issued on Frantic Records in 2005! Esteemed music writer ALEC PALAO writes in the CD liner notes "THE SHONDELLS parlayed what can only be described as good teen trash on their IKON singles which have become legendary....If truth be told, they were probably a lot more accomplished than the recorded evidence suggests, judging by the remarkably prescient Folk-Rock sound of their sophomore 45 "IT'S TRUE". Drummer and group leader PERRY JONES declares that 'on the second single, we were trying to go in THE BYRDS direction, except for the fact that our group at the time was playing more RAY CHARLES-oriented music live. We needed to change direction...On "I CRIED LAST NIGHT" we were trying to take American blues and marry it to the English sound, because the English rock beat had more of a cadence to it." At the time of this recording, I worked at IKON Records stocking shipments of 45's and setting up the studio for recording sessions. I worked there under the direction of my mentor [and older cousin] JIM BARKLEY. I worked there during 1964-65 off and on. In 1966, still a high school junior, I got my first radio gig as an all-night Jazz DJ and dropped my work at IKON. JIM used to allow me in the control booth during sessions and let me watch the recording process. I remember meeting ERIK WANGBERG but our time at IKON barely overlapped and I wasn't around for much of his work there. Needless to say, I have great memories of my time at IKON and profound thanks to JIM BARKLEY for his introduction into the world of music where I spent the next 30 years. R.I.P. JIM.
