Canadian firm composer, Howard Shaw has more than 80 credits to his name, including a slew of cult classics directed by his fellow countrymen, the auteur David Cronenberg. If we were to revisit titles like The Brood, Scanners and Dead Ringers, although none immediately strike you as boasting epic scores, some of the same musical traditions are evident in those soundtracks as they are here. As if it even needs to be said, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King comes with the kind of music that evokes huge mountain tops, lightning storms, biblical rain and hordes of orcs. Sweeping classical instrumentation creating an atmosphere of death defying missions, blood oaths, and fantastical adventures. Party Music this is not, nevertheless, it's unarguably impressive.
