Peter Jackson's monumental adaptation of The Lord of the Rings demanded a score of equal scale and this artist delivered one of the finest fantasy soundtracks ever recorded. Now reissued as a lavish double-pack vinyl, The Fellowship of the Ring sounds every bit as commanding and magical as it did on first release. Shore's writing strikes an perfect balance: moments of ominous dread along with passages of warmth and hope. The now-iconic Fellowship theme, grows in strength as the story unfolds, symbolising the unity of the nine heroes. In contrast, the Celtic-inflected Hobbit music is light, playful and full of heart, mirroring the carefree but loving spirit of the Shire inhabitants. What truly sets the score apart is its sheer scale. Performed by the London Philharmonic, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and a massive choir singing in Tolkien's invented languages, the music has an ancient bravado. Tracks like 'The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm' and 'Amon Hen' thunder with pounding percussion and soaring choral lines, while quieter cues such as 'Concerning Hobbits' or 'Lothlorie' shimmer with intimacy and mystery. On vinyl and soon to be celebrating 25 years since first heard, a landmark score, brilliantly presented in this new edition.
