PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Black Orchids remaining more raw, crude and heavy -- fans of Thunderpussy, Sorcery, Truth & Janey, Poobah, Randy Holden "Population II" (etc.) and all things heavy rock from the cool old early '70s scene -- need to investigate...
A limited private pressing issued in a plain white sleeve, made for fans and friends of the band. The music is heavy psych with long distortion guitar solos. The album was recorded in BLACK ORCHID member John Wherle's basement studio.
Black Orchids hailed from Charleston, West Virginia and consisted of the heavy guitar dominator trio; John Wehde, Rob Hamer and Paul Bennington. In 1972 they pressed “AWOL”, their sole output, on their own Black Orchids Records label in a tiny edition of 200 copies. The album came in a plain white sleeve, shrink wrapped ...some copies had only the title and band info written on the outside of the shrink with a marker pen. You can imagine how many of these survived intact! Other copies were issued without the marker information on outer cellophane. The album consists of one long track “AWOL” which was 29 minutes long was spread over the two sides of the LP. The inferior bootleg CD version has the track rejoined as one continuous piece.
Black Orchids drummer Robb Trowbridge remembers: "A friend, Jack Griffith told me that John Wherle was looking for a drummer for a two man band. I took my drums over to his house and after months of practice, and I mean months, we had Black Orchids. We had to perfect a type of sound because we were just a two man band; guitar and drums (ala Randy Holden's POPULATION II) ... John developed a style he called subharmonics, which used a type of dreamy open string chords. Joe Stevens came along when we played the Earth Day Festival in 1970, at Kanawha State Forest with many other bands. John and I felt we could get a bigger sound with the added bass. All our songs were written by ourselves except a cover of Yellow Cab Man by Gun and they were all (heavy psych) instrumentals".
