This album was released on November 16, 1964. Containing five original songs and seven standards, the album proved to be a long-running success during subsequent Christmas seasons, initially reaching #6 in the US Christmas album chart in its year of release and eventually going gold.
So... what we have here are five GREAT new Beach Boys original Christmas songs played surf/beach style - and I do mean great; they clearly put as much thought into these vocal lines as they did with even NON-holiday songs. We'll give them "properties at a reasonable rate" for the unbelievably complex vocal harmonies they do in "We Three Kings of Orient Are." This follows the same formula as Beach Boys " Today! " ...The first side is all rockers, while the second side is ballads. Obviously, “Little Saint Nick” is a highlight on the first side. The most interesting thing about the first side is the fact that the backing music is more garage/surf-like than Christmas-y. The catchy “The Man With All The Toys” proves this. “Santa’s Beard” is an enjoyable track, because of the hilarious lyrics. How they could sing this without dying of laughter, we don’t know. All of the songs on this side are catchy surf songs about Christmas. The complex instrumentation in “Frosty The Snowman” is worth noting as well...
