1970 SIGNED BETTY CARTER - SELF TITLED LP 33 12"
Up for auction is an LP by Betty Carter. It is a live recording. This album is signed in pen on the cover, and reads 'to David + Janice Love Betty Carrter'. The penmanship / signature matches the pre-printed lettering on her album. This album was her first self-produced lp on her own label 'Bet-Car' (founded in 1971), and is in strong VG+ condition. It is numbered MK 1001, and features Norman Simmons on the piano, Lysle Atkinson, on bass and Al Harewood, on drums. It is a stereo recording, and it is considered to be Vocal Jazz. Betty was known for her unique style of vocals, and her improvisational technique. She stayed with her own label until she signed with Verve in 1988.
Betty was born 'Lillie Mae Jones' on May 16, 1929, in Flint Michigan. She passed away on September 26, 1998 from pancreatic cancer. She performed with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. She also toured with Ray Charles in the late fifties, on the advice of Miles Davis.
