SIGNED David Bowie - Rubber Band/The London Boy's - Deram 1966
A fantastic opportunity for any avid Bowie fans to bid on a "once in a blue moon" item, this being a super early instance of him signing his name 'Bowie'. Born David Jones, he changed his name in 1966 to 'David Bowie' in part to differentiate himself from Davy Jones of The Monkees who by that time had already become famous.
A rare Bowie single in its own right, this Deram 7" single originally belonged to a bass player who met David when they appeared on the same bill at The Continental Club in Eastbourne (The Belfry), where he played with his then band 'The Buzz'. Also appearing that night were a young David Essex, Alan Price and Jon Lord who later found fame with Deep Purple.
In addition to the provenance, the signature on the label has also been authenticated by a reputable signature dealer and, as you can see from the pictures, is a very good, clear example. It has been passed down through the family before finally making its way to us here at The Vinyl Frontier. And now it could be yours!
This record was originally released in December 1966 with a misprint on the B side making it rare in its own right even without the signature. The title on the B-Side is printed as "The London Boy's", containing the misprinted erroneous apostrophe in the word "Boy's".
Grading As a piece of vinyl, the record grades as Good. It plays through from start to finish on both sides but there are marks and surface noise. The grade is also partly due to the four-pronged middle having been pushed out. We have seen other similar copies for sale in excess of £200 though as it is extremely hard to find. And of course you're not buying this record just to play, you're buying an important and significant piece of musical history, the like of which will probably not be available any time soon.
An essential piece for any dedicated Bowie fan's collection.
