Description
For your consideration is an exceedingly scarce, original (not later reproduction) circa 1950 publicity photograph of Miles Davis, from the Shaw Artists Corporation (565 Fifth Avenue New York 17 New York), which managed Davis at the time. Silver gelatin photograph, which measures 8 x 10 inches, has some light crimping and age toning at the left hand margin. It bears the insignia of New York photography studio, James Kriegsmann, lower left. Photograph bears the signature of Davis in ink, verso.
This is an extremely scarce early publicity photo of Davis, who was represented by the Shaw Artists Corporation, if I am not mistaken, from the late 1940s to mid-1950s, before signing with legendary jazz producer, George Avakian, in 1956. I believe that this dates from 1950, firstly because he is obviously very young, but also because the Getty Museum has one of these and have dated it to 1950.
