Slayer is an American thrash metal band founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King in 1981. Slayer rose to fame as a leader of the American thrash metal movement with their 1986 release, Reign in Blood, which has been called "the heaviest album of all time" by Kerrang!. The band is credited as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth.

Slayer is known for its musical traits, involving fast tremolo picking, guitar solos, double bass drumming, and shouting vocals. The band's lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as death, deviants, genocide, insanity, religion, Satanism, serial killers, and warfare have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and strong criticism from religious groups and the general public.

Show No Mercy is the debut album by American thrash metal band Slayer, released in December 1983 through Metal Blade Records. Brian Slagel signed the band to Metal Blade after watching the band perform the song "Phantom of the Opera" by Iron Maiden. The band was forced to self-finance their debut album, combining the savings of vocalist Tom Araya, who was employed as a respiratory therapist, and money borrowed from guitarist Kerry King's father.

Touring extensively promoting the album, the band brought close friends and family members along the trip, who helped backstage with lighting and sound. Although criticized for poor production quality, it became Metal Blade Records highest selling release, also producing the songs "Die by the Sword", "The Antichrist" and "Black Magic", which are played at Slayer's live shows regularly.

A hugely important album in the metal genre, Slayer's debut album has inevitably dated a little, and pales in comparison to their best output ('86 - '94 being the golden years by my reckoning), but is still so chock full of great riffs that it remains an essential listen. The most obvious point to make is that this first album shows Slayer at their least extreme with their metal influences still showing - Tormentor sounds like an Iron Maiden song, and Crionics is identical to the slow chugging thrash of early Metallica - throughout the album drummer Dave Lombardo struggles to get out of mid-pace, with only Final Command pointing the way towards the speed metal Slayer would perfect on Reign in Blood. A few cheesy lyrics and dated metal screams are par for the course in 1983 - guitar-wise however this album really cannot be faulted, and the guitar tones here actually sound better than they do on South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss (maybe remastering has had an effect here?). A very strong debut, Slayer would do better in the future but any album containing such classic tracks as The Antichrist and Black Magic has to go down as an essential purchase to anyone interested in the roots of extreme metal.
