SLPM 138 025 Strauss Ein Heldenleben, Karajan, BPO. NM-

Richard Strauss

Ein Heldenleben, Op 40

Michel Schwalbe - solo violin
Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by
Herbert von Karajan

I am auctioning classical records from my father's collection, which he maintained throughout the Fifties and Sixties.  Some of these LPs he later sold, some of them he put away and forgot. He always handled them extremely carefully so the actual vinyl is pristine but most of the covers are now showing their age.

Until a few days ago, when I got them out in order to describe them, these records hadn't been touched for at least 35 years, probably more.

I have read all sorts of things about cleaning them; firstly I tried a modern cleaner which was awful - my test record sounded ghastly. Then I found an old bottle of 'Parastat' and a 'Fredorec' sponge - much, much better. In combination with a dust bug, nearly all static and background noise was removed. All records have been tested on a modern Sony record player but I wish the old one some of these photos were taken on was still working, as I've read one theory that the modern stylus is too light and rides too high in the grooves of old vinyl... Does that make sense?

This record's appearance is NM.  The surface has a good shine to it, the label is pristine. There is some light crackling before the music begins and one or two other areas of light crackling (perhaps a different anti-stat liquid to mine will get rid of this, as quite a lot of crackling has already disappeared after treatment), because of that I presume the grade will drop slightly to NM-.The inner sleeve has slight age discolouration, and creasing - condition E.  Cover is E++ with minimal wear at the corners and edges.

I have read an awful lot about record condition and grading in the past few days and the above seems about right, but I'm not an expert nor claim to be.  I do want to be honest, however, and not over-inflate these grades as there doesn't seem much point. Because I know so little, I am starting this at 99p and will let it find its own level.

Record will be removed from its outer cover first and wrapped in bubble wrap, then everything will be placed between stiffeners and sent in a new cardboard mailer.

I will always discount postal charges for multiple LPs
please email me first so I can send a customised invoice.

When you win LPs with a value of £36 or over, I will send them by insured services, so that you are covered should your parcel go astray. I think you'll agree that some of these LPs would be hard to replace so this seems the best way to send them. Please wait for my invoice. The international 'signed for' service is £3.50 to Europe & £4.00 to Rest of World plus regular postal costs. If you strongly object to having your parcel sent with insurance, please let me know.
