In their latest dive into the back catalogue of local legends Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, Bristol Archive Records gathers together cuts the pioneering twosome released on their own Three Stripe Records in 1988 and 89. What it represents is the earliest explorations of what would become 'the Bristol sound' - the proto-trip-hop sound that effortlessly blended elements of formative street soul, hip-hop, dub and electro. Naturally, the duo's fine Burt Bacharach covers are present 'Anyone' and 'Walk On By' (the latter in two mix forms), as well as various rap-focused B-sides and bonus cuts (see 'This Is The Time', 'Mix Down Maestro', 'Clash Of The Beats (Instrumental)'), more obviously digi-dub inspired fare ('Brain Scan'), hip-hop/ragga fusion ('Time To Rhyme') and proto-breakbeat ('Killa').
