Patti Smith's debut Horses turns 50 this year and the milestone is laid with a remastered double vinyl edition here, cut direct from the original masters, expanding on the 1975 classic with unheard demos, alternate takes, and rarities, including Smith's original RCA audition tape. Horses catapulted the New Jersey poet and New York punk progenitor into fullscreen view, its opening line "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" working as manifesto and mantra. With John Cale and a band that became her long-time collaborators, Smith put front-and-centre poetry, garage rock and freeform improvisation into starmaking songs like her cover of The Doors' 'Gloria', 'Birdland' and 'Free Money'; this anniversary set tracks the birth of an artist in the liners, one who would later reshape rock with albums like Easter and Wave.
