The story goes something like this. After a dozen straight hits, Solomon Burke was crowned the King of Rock 'N Soul by Rockin' Robin of radio station WEBB in Baltimore in 1964.

Solomon took the title very seriously (but also with a great deal of his trademark humour).

Not only is Rock 'N Soul one of the most important albums in the Solomon Burke legacy, it's one of the best sounding ones. None of the 11 tracks (5 of them were massive hits that kept Atlantic Records - a much smaller label back then - alive at that time) is even remotely weak. Some lesser-known gems like "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)," "Beautiful Brown Eyes," and "He'll Have To Go" stand today as some of the best songs the charismatic and powerful gospel singer ever recorded, and they stand just as tall as the colossus songs on Rock 'N Soul like "Cry To Me," (R&B #5, Pop#44) "Can't Nobody Love You," (Pop #66) "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)," (Pop #33) "Just Out Of Reach (Of My Two Open Arms)," (R&B #7, Pop #24) and "You're Good For Me" (R&B #8, Pop#49).

It's very unlikely that the world of music is ever going to see another personality like Big Sol. Someone larger than life who was a licensed mortician, infamous popcorn dealer (The Apollo Theater will never forget his pickup of soul popcorn), unshakable soul singer, ever-ready business strategist, KKK survivor, wonder-boy preacher who spread the word of love (no matter what your faith is in or what religion you are), and a man who never lost his cool when James Brown tried to literally "steal" his King of Rock 'N Soul crown. No, it's very unlikely there'll be another Solomon Burke, and Rock 'N Soul does a remarkable job capturing everything that made Solomon what he was.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered across most of the back panel

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
