_____ If your collection only has room for, "the best of the best" ...consider this is his 1st session recorded after Blue Train, on Feb 7th, 1958.

_____ Featuring The Red Garland Trio a month earlier, several sides were cut that would end up on Coltrane's Lush Life album. However, evidence that Coltrane had all ready mastered the Jazz idiom is found here on SOULTRANE'S variety of performance styles; and settings which never hinder his nuance-- It's heard throughout this album. The breakneck bop tempo of Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" ballads, "I Want To Talk," "Theme for Ernie," & mid-tempo romp, "Good Bait," -each displays a sonic texture; a different facet of the musical kinship between Coltrane and Garland, & Coltrane's relationship with the music. The 1st track which earned the phrase, "sheets of sound" about his technique, is heard here on"Russian Lullaby." His more languid and considerate phrasings are displayed particularly well on, "I Want To Talk." As time will reveal, this session's manic contrast would become a significant attribute of Coltrane's brilliant, & unpredictable performance style. It's surprising that this album has perhaps yet been given, the exclusive attention it so deserves. -- The RC
