The stories, music and sounds of the people of New York. label & cat. no.: ~ Folkways FC 7341 ~ pressed in: USA ~ date: 1962 ~ format: 10" 33rpm. Includes original booklet. Scarce album of sound collages and ambient atmospheres recorded and narrated by the legendary sound archivist Tony Schwartz in 1956 in New York City, with street musicians, conversations, restaurants, alleyways, construction machinery, churches, synagogues, etc. One segment showcases the playing of a "blind street musician using instruments of his own invention" who often performed near Schwartz' home, none other than Moondog - one of the earliest recordings of the legendary modern classical/jazz outsider! This fascinating lp documents Schwartz' investigations into his sonic neighborhood, making for an excellent source of unique sound effects for producers/DJs/turntablists as well as an interesting artifact for collectors of NYC historical ephemera and the obscure reaches of the Moondog discography. Includes 8 page insert. Tracks are: City Street Sounds; Sounds Outside My House; People Sing, Dance, Pray, Talk; Children Play, Sing. New York-based field recordist, engineer, and sound designer Tony Schwartz released several documentary albums for Folkways and Columbia, recorded some of the earliest Moondog sessions, and produced radio shows demonstrating an appreciation of sound and visionary understanding of electronic media that endeared him to Marshall McLuhan, Edward Steichen, Ben Shahn, and Bill Moyers and placed him in the pantheon of 20th century aural innovators and magnetic tape pioneers alongside composers like John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and Jim Fassett. He also published books and produced television commercials mostly of a public service or non-profit nature, including the famous Daisy Girl political ad for Lyndon Johnson and an anti-smoking ad credited with convincing the tobacco industry to halt television advertising. Moondog was a composer and NYC street musician influenced by jazz, native american, and medieval music, as well as by his friendships with Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Artur Rodzinski, Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini, Dmitri Mitropolous, George Szell, Martha Graham, and Duke Ellington. This field recording/sound effects record is the kind of unintentional turntablism/musique concrete tool used by artists like Pierre Schaeffer, Luc Ferrari, Jim Fassett, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, DJ Shadow, The X-Ecutioners, Mix Master Mike, Q-Bert, Otomo Yoshihide, Christian Marclay, Martin Tetreault, Erik M, Negativland, Kid Koala, etc.......
I grade all of my records on a conservative scale visually (SS, NM, NM-, VG+, VG, VG-, and G).
All items are 100% original pressings unless otherwise noted.
I will ship internationally to most countries but shipping charges are not $4 and any item that is $50 USD or more shipped international will have to be sent registered mail which is $12.95 USD on top of shipping cost, no exceptions. International shipping is dependent on the actual cost of shipping from the post office. Please do not pay if you are international before I send you an invoice. Payment is due within 3 days.
NOTE I WILL NOT SHIP TO ITALY OR FRANCE. IF YOU PLACE A BID I WILL CANCEL. Sorry, too many customs issues.
I ship in very sturdy record mailers with 2 solid cardboard stiffeners and tape very well with shipping tape. Shipping is a little heavier because of this but I choose safety over cheaper cost for shipping. I also always separate the record from the cover during shipping to prevent splits unless item is already sealed. Any LP that is $50 USD or more I give the royal treatment with protective plastic sleeves for the LP and cover. All 45's come in a plastic protective sleeve no matter the final auction. Please don't hesitate to ask any and all questions as I am quick to answer. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
