Rare UK LP Released on KLF Communications records in 1990. Reissue released in the 90's
Today seems to have been about revisiting two fantastic pieces of ambient greatness from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. These were acid soaked and speed arc light hedonistic days that had a soundtrack carved out of its own.
The two albums are the products of a hugely significant collaboration between Jimmy Cauty (KLF) and Dr Alex Paterson (the Orb). Both albums were produced using samples and keyboards and both were recorded at the legendary Trancentral (a squat studio and home of Cauty). The music produced during these sessions was referred to as "Ambient house for the E generation" by its two protagonists.
Secondly, the album ‘Space’ is an ambient exploration of the heavenly regions, as visited in the early hours of the morning. The album, according to Cauty, was produced using only Oberheim keyboards, this i believe adds that science fiction sound that will be familiar to those who watched ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ repeatedly during the summer of 1990. The album is the product of a split between the original members of the Orb. In 1990 Big Life offered them an album deal. Cauty preferred that albums by The Orb were released on his KLF Communications label, but Paterson wanted to ensure The Orb did not become a KLF sideshow. Due to these issues, Cauty and Paterson split. Paterson kept the name and Cauty removed Paterson's contributions from the recordings and released the album as 'Space.'
My favourite moment comes at 19.40 mins. where the sample of the nursery rhyme ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ echoes around the room creating an ethereal recreation of the birth of our solar system seen through a eyes of a baby, it is quiet simply a beautiful piece of modern and contemporary ambient classical music, that the likes of Brian Eno, Jean Michel Jarre and Pink Floyd inspired. But, it has to be noted that these giants of music could never have produced these sounds since they commanded a wealth of technology. It is the simplicity of the production and the lack of tools used, that made both 'Chill Out' and 'Space' an Ambient Manifesto for Generation X.
Cauty is quoted in Record Collector as stating that Space is ‘ a record for 14 year old space cadets to go and take acid (to) for the first time.’
