Description

This is a single-sided, 1-page song rights waiver/release agreement/contract dated December 4, 1947 by Clyde "Spade" Cooley.  This document is written on the letterhead of Melody Music Company, addressed to Hite B. Morgan, and reads:

"Dear Sirs! -

I hearby release all claims and rights to the song - "Time Heals Everything".

Sincerley Yours,

Clyde 'Spade' Cooley"

Over the years, I've seen a very small handful of Spade Cooley signed pieces, but this is an AMAZINGLY RARE piece of music memorabilia, and truly a ONE-OF-A-KIND collectible!!!!!  This is not only because it shows the unfortunate, seedy side of the music business and how songwriters and artists were potentially taken advantage of, but because this was signed by Spade Cooley at his hit making peak.   But as you may know, Spade Cooley was convicted and jailed for the murder of his second wife, Ella Mae Evans.  Cooley died at the age of 58 in 1969, following a benefit concert he performed at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California for the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs Association.

I'm not sure if Hite B. Morgan was the owner of or an executive with the Melody Music Company or not, but he, along with his wife Dorinda, later went on to record the first songs by the Beach Boys, and the B-side of their first single, Luau, was written by Bruce "Hite" Morgan.  In fact, Murry Wilson on behalf of The Beach Boys, signed a Letter Of Intent and Agreement on March 29, 1962, for Hite and Dorinda to "...act as, and perform the duties of Producing, Recording, and Promoting any and all records and Songs Written, and or recorded by The Beach Boys...".   Their agreement predated the Beach Boys contract with Capitol Records.  I know that's a lot of backstory, but Bruce "Hite" Morgan has an interesting place in pop music history.

A few interesting things I'd like to point out, include that the song title is clearly noted on this piece as "Time Heals Everything", but I found a recording on the web and some Wiki info that shows that Spade Cooley did a song called "Time Changes Everything".  Also, the performing rights organization that "Time Heals Everything" is registered through, notes the songwriter's of this song to be Spade Cooley and Dorinda Morgan, Hite Morgan's wife (see above).  With all that said, I'm not sure whether there's two individual songs titled "Time Heals Everything" and "Time Changes Everything" by Spade Cooley, or if this is just a mistake (if you know, please feel free to share the info with me).

This is a SUPER RARE & COOL piece of vintage country/western swing memorabilia, which came out of the collection of this well-known music publisher.  I have a handful of items from this collection up for auction this week, so make sure you check them all out!!!

This approximately 8.5" x 11" document shows light handling marks, light flattened folds, light creases, a handful of small missing pieces at the edges, approximately 7 tears measuring from 1/4" - 1" at the edges and overall aging, which would be expected for a nearly 64-year old document.  The text and signature on this document appears to be in black pen ink, which shows as a faint impression on the reverse side.  This document is in overall good minus - good condition.  This is a RARE & COOL Spade Cooley collectible, make sure you bid on this one today!!!

Buyer pre-pays the winning bid price and FREE Priority Mail S/H for postage, mailing package and packing materials in the good ol' USA (insurance extra if buyer feels necessary).  For winning bidders from Canada, buyer pre-pays the winning bid price and $16.00 USD for International Express Mail postage and insurance (the $16.00 USD noted is 50% of the final cost that you'll pay & the remaining $16.00 USD is 50% of the final cost that I will pay). For winning bidders outside of the US and Canada, buyer pre-pays the winning bid price and $20.00 USD for International Express Mail postage and insurance (the $20.00 USD noted is 50% of the final cost that you'll pay & the remaining $20.00 USD is 50% of the final cost that I will pay). For Multiple International wins, please wait for me to calculate the S/H before you make payment (see note below).
