SPEAK O PHONE 78 RPM Record 1931 Aluminum 6.5" Man & Friends Talk Sing
This is an unusually listenable Speak O phone record, which is has little surface noise and scratches.
It features a man with his three friends. The record opens with "Reverend Roy Ringwald (or could be Greenwald) who says the date, April 27, 1931, and his location, at this one address in New York City. He speaks a moment and introduces one of his friends, who speaks a little, and then the other two friends consecutively.
They all talk a moment then sing, extremely well, Auld Lang Syne. After that they talk a moment then it ends.
This is a neat recording to hear given the year of 1931 and that they were recording on a Speak O Phone machine in someone's apartment.
I'm guessing these men were in an actual singing quartet of some sort.
While this is lower than usual surface noise, there is distortion on the recording, like the microphone was overmodulating or overdriven somehow, and it carries through all vocals. Also there is one skip about 3/4 of the way through the record.
Other than that, the recording is very listenable and unusual for this time period, considering Recordio machines and wire recorders would come out a decade later.
