Label/Format: Island – original pink labels with orange eyeball logo. The labels are deeply textured with a really rough and rustic finish and include the deep inner ridge (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. There is a small name and number on side one near the hold which can be clearly seen on my scan. This being the only blemish on two really lovely original labels

Cat Number: ILPS 9080.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 161 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Classic debut from this band that made several album for Island Records, this being the rarest by some distance. This is the one most collectors want and is regarded as a mini-classic blending psych with progressive elements. This very heavy pressing on the original format labels is one of the earliest ever made and it plays beautifully. With just a tiny few ultra faint surface blemishes on the record and an ID name on one label, it has faired well for its considerable vintage, all evidence strongly suggests very few plays. The very flimsy lightweight cover has also survived the years well too but does have a few minor issues for the more discerning collector to consider but most will enjoy it I feel sure. All details below.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) but still highly attractive. A single fully laminated format made with very thin and soft card, this bends easily and most not be held on any single corner. Printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a lovely shine and clarity with hardly any friction rubs or dulling. There is mild record rim impression which is nigh-on unavoidable with a 160 gram record inside for well over 40 years. A few mainly light and quite fine creases and a fine laminate lift on the spine edge on the front, this shows very little against this more complex backdrop artwork. The most significant blemish is a very small surface pull on the back near the top right corner, being positioned here, it has very little visual impact and the eye barely notices it. The very psych artwork looks superb both sides with vibrant, fresh colour retained. The ends where the laminate ends a little short have darkened a little with just a couple of fine and small surface scuffs. Overall both sides look very nice indeed as I hope my pictures confirm.

Top Edge: Very thinly made and barely any noteable wear.

Bottom Edge: As above with odd tiny chip, both surprisingly straight given the lack of width.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Incredibly thin again, compressed or not, not sure. As solid and straight as could be expected. All text is near perfect and unworn under the solid laminate. The spine is so thin the text is seen via the front as there is no room on the actual spine edge.

Corners: The corners are neat but with a couple of small surface pulls.

Cover Summary: A very fine all round example of this very fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still looks attractive with any flaws or wear modest and light, it should please many collectors but not the perfectionists of course. Do not underestimate just how delicate, light and flimsy this highly damage-prone cover is, made even more so with a very heavy record inside.

The Inner: The original polylined inner is included in around EX condition or so. Just some corner creases but little else to fault. The lining solid, very clear and the window hole immaculate.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX and with any few surface marks light and faint and with NO sound, finding a genuine first pressed copy of this elusive Island classic better will prove hard. A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with only light use on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. These vintage albums rarely escape a few faint surface blemishes or hairlines and this example sets the bar high. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. If the quality of the sound and music is a priority over minor cover and visual blemishes, this could be the copy you have been waiting for.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.

NOTE: This example is one of the earliest pressings ever issued and rarest with some fine details to prove the point. One of the very first to be issued in stereo only on Island. The labels have the text ‘Stereo Compatible’ which clearly is stating the obvious on a stereo record, this was soon removed on even slightly later examples. Also, with reference to the matrixes, which refer to this using 'SC'. Island put this on their earliest first pressings to alert buyers, as most other Island LPs were issued in mono at this time. By the end of the First Press run in 1969 - many record buyers had turned to stereo - so the Stereo Compatible text was removed.
