SR 90212, CHABRIER, Espana, Danse Slave, Fete Polonaise, Suite Pastorale, Gwendoline Overture, Paul Paray, Detroit Symphony, RFR1/RFR1: This is NOT a reissue – it is the original 50+ year old, RFR1/RFR1 pressing. It is my favorite of all the Mercury’s for both its incredible sound and lively interpretation. It can be found in TAS on Sid Marks’ final summary of the best Mercury’s from Detroit. The sound is magnificent – large, full, warm and detailed and VERY three- dimensional, with amazing dynamics and hall sound. (Compared to this LP, the CD sounds flat and 2 dimensional.) This is my own copy, and the vinyl surfaces are clean, glossy and exceptionally quiet, EXCEPT for a very soft repeating tic that sounds intermittently during tracks 2 & 3 on side 1. It is caused by one of two light scuffs on this side – the first causes this tic, while the second makes no sound at all. There are NO marks on side 2 - it is perfectly quiet and grades NM. I am grading side 1 as EX+ only due to the light tic – otherwise, it plays and looks NM. The labels are perfectly clean with no wear, but a single faint spindle trail on side 1. The jacket is clean and grades NM with no marks or seam splits, but very slight corner dings (see photos). The inner sleeve is also NM. Overall, this is beautiful copy of this amazing golden age recording that plays almost perfectly. Feel free to return for a full refund if not completely satisfied.
