SÉRGIO BORGES & CONJUNTO JOÃO PAULO

“Lavrador”

EP 7”

Columbia / Valentim de Carvalho

1971

Portugal

Record: Very Good +

Cover: Very Good [with small signature also on back cover]

This is an ultra-rare EP by Conjunto João Paulo, one of the best Portuguese beat groups from the 1960’s. This is, however, an EP from 1971, their third after a one-year absence in 1969, when they were drafted to combat in Portuguese inglorious war in Africa.

Singer Sérgio Borges should have been Portuguese representative in the 1970 Eurovision Festival, as he won the Portuguese Song Contest that would have given that allowance. However, in that year Portugal decided not to enter the competition, as a form of protest against 1969 quadruple-winning.

Conjunto João Paulo was the first Portuguese pop group to release an LP – this was in 1966, with the faux-live “Conjunto Académico João Paulo no Teatro Monumental”, and they were also the group that would release a bigger number of EP’s and singles throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. In fact, their first record was published in 1964 and their last one in 1972.

What you find here is a group of four original songs, all written in a psych vein by the members of the group. They started dealing with psychedelic rock in their 1967 EP “Poema de um Homem Só” [Poem of a Man Alone], but here they were at the top of their craftsmanship, always served by Sérgio Borges great and deep voice. “Lavrador” [Farmer] features top guitar work with some funk overtones, and has lyrics by José Dores (well known as Zeca do Rock, one of the first Portuguese pop rock heroes of the early 1960’s); “Serei um Dia o Mar” [One Day I’ll Be the Sea] goes along in this vein, but João Paulo’s keyboards get front place and embellish this track which also features some vocal phasers. B-side starts with “Estrada Branca” [White Road], which features top brass arrangements by Zé Manel (ex-member of Quinteto Académico, one of the best Portuguese soul beat groups of the mid 1960’s), and great drumming by Adrien, a Belgian drummer that played in top group Les Cousins and when coming to Portugal was also a member of Quinteto Académico (not to mention that he also played with jazz monsters Dexter Gordon and Don Byas!). The last track is the bucolic “Paul da Serra” [On the Top of the Hill], which resembles Quarteto 1111 material from that time but is also a killer track, with flute and pseudo-harpsichord sounds building up a beautiful song that develops into a sometimes violent and funky side.

You won’t find these tracks in any other records, as they were only released on this 7”. Don’t lose your chance of getting this never before seen relic!
