Label/Format: MCA – rarer white label format, possibly made for export? These have printed text and have a matt, smooth finish.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with light(+)/less than moderate spindle marks. The record’s playing surfaces are very clean with minimal surface blemishes and offers top-quality sound as you would expect from a Decca-pressed record.

Brief Info: A somewhat unusual and original British band, this was one of the first albums on the MCA label and is quite rare and seldom seen. Sales would have been minimal, especially on the first format label, this by a distance is Stackridge’s most sort-after album. Quirky and varied with a host of influences and styles. Blending rock, pop, classical with folk and psychedelia they claim inspiration from the likes of The Beatles (George Martin was a later producer), Syd Barrett, The Incredible String Band and even Frank Zappa (amongst others). Their early works are very interesting and entertaining and deserve more attention. Never really commercial or big sellers, but in their own strange way, almost unique in a crowded market of progressive music at this time. It can be argued they never quite sounded this good again, this debut is impressive, especially after a few plays (as the best albums invariably are). This is a very nice copy and offers top quality sound from a Decca pressing – later ones on the rainbow labels were not Decca-made. The cover has a sticker residue mark on the back, but fine that apart.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): mainly due to the sticker mark on the back. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the Decca-style polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very little to fault on this wear-prone cover front, clean, still quite fresh and attractive with hardly any rubbing or creasing. Any marks bordering on minuscule, this is nice.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, but has a moderate sticker reside mark near the top right corner with a very small surface pull. So not perfect, but being situated where it is (compared a central area for example), it has less visual impact and does not draw the eyes attention too much.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, practically nothing to fault at all.

Top Edges: Practically devoid of wear, both straight, flat and flush.

Bottom Edges: A little patchy rubbing, then mostly as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burring seen viewed end-on, very light and little. Record enters on either edge as both are naturally open with no adhesive marks to either inside – this has been the case on other copies of this I have had.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal traces of any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel that always makes for a much neater and attractive cover. Mildly discoloured with any rubbing minimal, practically all text present, any erosion to letters small and faint.

Corners: Minimal tip rubbing with mostly excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks of note.

Cover Summary: Even with the sticker issue on the back, still a strong all-round example of this scarce original early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better as this often wears badly. This attractive item should please many collectors, but clearly not the highly discerning or purists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Decca-style heavy-duty polylined inner that is British patented. Two immaculate window circles and very clear lining. Moderate paper toning, so aged in that respect, but with hardly any creasing, no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better, just a fine surface mark on the final song that does absolutely nothing. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and heavily pressed on top-quality pure Decca vinyl. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any other surface traces tiny, few and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer black and white label copy of this very early MCA record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no tracking issues*, I am certain this record has been played modestly and largely with due care. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unusual and varied record, a real grower with a few plays, this band had an almost unique sound at this time. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, and possibly one for rarer label collectors – was this ever a ‘standard’ MCA format?

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
