Description

Superb Blue Note Tone Poet Edition of Coming Your Way by Stanley Turrentine. Audiophile Excellence.
‘Comin Your Way’ is the third recording as leader Stanley Turrentine made for Blue Note. It was recorded on 20th January 1961 and was eventually released in 1987. The rhythm section, regularly used by Turrentine, features Horace Parlan (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Al Harewood (drums), whilst Stanley’s brother Tommy is on trumpet. The album consists of three standards, the first of which kicks the album off. It is a gently swinging version of ‘My Girl Is Just Enough Woman For Me’. Turrentine shows his renowned sensitivity on the ultra-mellow version of ‘Then I’ll Be Tired Of You’. The band get into the Soul Jazz bag on ‘Fine Lil Lass’. It grooves gracefully with the saxophonist’s solo delivering a powerful punch. Tommy Turrentine’s ‘Thomasville’ is a hard-hitting Bop swinger that features some joyful blowing from the two brothers. George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ is a sumptuous ballad. Wild Bill Davis’ ‘Stolen Sweets’ swings with grace and beauty. The horn lines are sublime. ‘Comin Your Way’ is a fine piece of work typical of much of the Soul Jazz that Blue Note recorded in the early sixties. Turrentine is soulful throughout and the rhythm section swings and at times cooks splendidly. Opened but not played.
