Pressed at Santa Maria, CA. Former Chief Mastering Engineer at A&M Studios, 1968 to 1984 Bernie Grundman. There has always been a small disagreement about the lettering of the matrix number. Which was first? AA or AB. Goldmine goes with AA. No matter they are both 1977 autumn releases. AA is before AB. ABC Records should agree. Great sounding vinyl from a great revolving group of musicians.
For that reason Aja is a wonderfully strange bird indeed. It’s odd enough that the album gets pegged as jazz rock, not really jazz enough, a category awkwardly shared by the likes of David Sandborn and Miles Davis. While Aja is more rock than jazz, it’s the jazz elements that give this album its unique sound. Steely Dan came out of the ’70s during a time when fusion jazz was exciting and new. Perhaps due to high and demanding standards, the band was a revolving cast of members anchored around Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Their brand of fusion would blend rock, R&B and even funk for a truly original sound that was a welcome counter to the big glam rock trends of the era. Thank you for your valuable time and read.
