Description

Stefan Askenase ( 10 July 1896 - 18 October 1985 ) was a Polish-born Belgian pianist, studied with Theodor Pollak at the Music School in Lemberg, then with Emil von Sauer at the Vienna Academy, debut 1919 in this town and subsequently toured throughout the world. Thaught also at the Rotterdam Conservatory from 1937-1949, in Brussel from 1954-1961. His pupils included Martha Argerich, André Tchaikowsky, John McKay and Mitsuko Uchida.

Date of the matrices: 02.09.1952. Sides 03971, 3973 and 3974 have the handwriting mention * Vorläufige Freigabe, wird nochmals überspielt / Approval provisional, must be transfered once again *.    Condition: 2, slight traces of use and handling.

Dates of the matrices: 03.09.1952 for the LWS, 19.09.1952 for the LWN. This is the final version, used for the production.    Condition: 1-2

The date pressed in wax around the label isn't the recording date, it's the date of the matrix, used for the production. The recording date is 4-8 weeks before, only the year ( 1952 ) is correct.

Use a smaller saphyr ( needle ) with 0.015" ( 37 mikron, or LP/EP saphyr ) for the DGG VARIO MICROGRADE records ! Excellent sound.

Grading:

1 = mint, never played on gramophone, is not used

1-2 = top copy, no traces of use - virtually as new

2 = excellent copy, few light non-sounding rubs/marks

2-3 = light traces of wear (rubs/marks), very light greying and/or light scratches, non sounding blemishes

3 = a good average copy with more noticeable rubs and marks; light greying, few light scratches possible

3-4 = more traces of use, sonic wear from light greying. An inferior average copy, light scratches possible

4 = some sounding wear, heavier rubs and marks, scratches possible

5 = obvious sounding wear, heavy rubs, marks, scratches. An unsatisfactory copy.
