Karlheinz Stockhausen “Illimite” LP issued by Shandar (S.R.10.002) in France, 1971. ****** Rec:m- Cov:m- ****** Alongside "Ceylon" and "Stimmung" one of the most florid and mystical of Stockhausen's recordings. This very rare LP documents the estatic improvisation by Johannes G. fritsch (viola with contact microphone and filter), Vinko Globokar (trombone), Carlos Roque Alsina (piano), Jean-François Jenny-Clark (double-bass), Jean-Pierre Drouet (percussion), Michel Portal (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone), Karlheinz Stockhausen (voice, two japanese metal cups, siren whistle, short-wave receiver, a filter and two potentiometers for viola). Along with the instruction for “Illimite” (“Play a sound / with the certainty / that you have an infinite amount of time and space”) there is drawn a parabola-like curve which runs off the top of the printed page and descends back into the page a little further on. The curve suggests going beyond the available limits of space and time. Recorded in Darmstadt between 11:00 and 12:00 in the morning on August 28th, 1969 without previous rehearsal. The spoken text in this recording is taken from the book “On Yoga I, The Synthesis of Yoga by Sri Aurobindo”. At the beginning of the recording Stockhausen opened the book by chance at page 710 and read with repetitions, many pauses, tempo variations, terraced dynemics, using rin, siren whistle, loud breathing, noises and fragments of speech from short-wave-receiver as punctuation, from the XVII Chapter, previously unknown to him. The last spoken words are the French translation of the text of “Illimite”, and the mysterious sound of approaching cars, changing gear as they drive by, came into the recording from outside. One of the best music created by Karlheinz Stockhausen, and one of his most difficult to find record!
