EXCUSE ME for saying but Maggie Bell was the queen of the scene in the early seventies. Blessed with an amazing voice and incredible largeese, she fronted one of the finest blues rock bands ever to have trod the boards. Backed up adequately by a great band (including Les Harvey on guitar, bro' of Alex) the focuss was on straight down the line hard rockin' with Maggie belting out the toon like a women possessed. That's not to say that they couldn't mellow out when the mood took them. Indeed, you'll find a couple of super fine ballards here and one choice cover, Curtis Mayfield's 'Danger Zone'.
But its finely honed blues rock that STC will be most fondly remembered for - that and Maggie Bell's deliciously rough hewn vocals. She was a star in the making and it didn't take long for Atlantic records to snap her up for a solo career after the demise of the band. Here she sparkles like a polished diamond all soul, sweat and sex 'neath a mop of hazzle brown hair and fiery red wings.
Despite being managed by Peter Grant (Mr. Led Zeppelin) STC just couldn't catch a break and despite support from a staunch following on the live circuit and cutting three studio albums the band prematurely caved in hastily assisted by the death of guitarist Harvey following a tragic on stage electrocution.
A great album from a truly great band.
