·       THE STOOGES (with John Cale, producer) – THE SELF-TITLED FIRST ALBUM (“THE STOOGES”) – ORIGINAL ELEKTRA 1969 STEREO LP EKS-74051

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       ACCORDING TO THE SELLER OF THIS ALBUM, THE ALBUM WAS STILL SEALED UNTIL THE MORNING ON THE DAY WE ACQUIRED IT, A CLAIM WE WOULD NORMALLY BE RATHER SKEPTICAL ABOUT, BUT FOR THE TRULY INCREDIBLE CONDITION OF THE RECORD: NO WEAR OF ANY KIND AND ABSOLUTELY NO SPINDLE MARKS ANYWHERE!

·       ORIGINAL RED ELEKTRA LABEL WITH LARGE WHITE 'E' LOGO ON TOP.

·       The record has LEE HULKO'S ’ initials (LH) clearly stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax)

·       NOTE: We keep receiving false reports from folks who claim that this album originally came out on GOLD (tan)  Elektra label with the large "E" logo . Unfortunately, there is no such thing and there was never any such animal:  U.S. GOLD LABEL pressing of The Stooges’ first album DOES NOT EXIST, IT NEVER EXISTED AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO NOT EXIST. ALL GOLD LABEL PRESSINGS OF THIS TITLE ARE CANADIAN PRESSINGS, NO MATTER WHAT THE SELLER TELLS YOU!!! IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED ONE ON EBAY RECENTLY, SORRY – YOU HAVE BEEN SUCKERED.

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THIN CARDBOARD COVER (NO THICK CARDBOARD COVERS WERE EVER PRODUCED FOR THIS TITLE)

·       THE RECORD HAS 'STERLING SOUND' ACRONYM ("SS") HAND-ETCHED IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) AREA, WHICH IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED A PROOF OF AUTHENTICITY OF THE FIRST PRESSING.

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS IS AN EAST COAST (COLUMBIA, TERRE HAUTE, IN) PRESSING OF THE ALBUM; UNLIKE THE WEST COAST (MONARCH) PRESSINGS, THE EAST COAST PRESSINGS DID HAVE ELEKTRA'S ADDRESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LABEL AND DID HAVE THE GROUP'S NAME ON THE LABEL. THE TWO PRESSINGS WERE IN PRINT CONCURRENTLY AND DO NOT CHRONOLOGICALLY PRECEDE OR SUCCEED EACH OTHER.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

While the Stooges had a few obvious points of influence -- the swagger of the early Rolling Stones, the horny pound of the Troggs, the fuzztone sneer of a thousand teenage garage bands, and the Velvet Underground's experimental eagerness to leap into the void -- they didn't really sound like anyone else around when their first album hit the streets in 1969. It's hard to say if Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, Dave Alexander, and the man then known as Iggy Stooge were capable of making anything more sophisticated than this, but if they were, they weren't letting on, and the best moments of this record document the blithering inarticulate fury of the post-adolescent id. Ron Asheton's guitar runs (fortified with bracing use of fuzztone and wah-wah) are so brutal and concise they achieve a naïve genius, while Scott Asheton's proto-Bo Diddley drums and Dave Alexander's solid bass stomp these tunes into submission with a force that inspires awe. And Iggy's vividly blank vocals fill the "so what?" shrug of a thousand teenagers with a wealth of palpable arrogance and wondrous confusion. One of the problems with being a trailblazing pioneer is making yourself understood to others, and while John Cale seemed sympathetic to what the band was doing, he didn't appear to quite get it, and as a result he made a physically powerful band sound a bit sluggish on tape (this seller totally disagrees -- op.ed.). But "1969," "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "Real Cool Time," "No Fun," and other classic rippers are on board, and one listen reveals why they became clarion calls in the punk rock revolution. Part of the fun of The Stooges is, then as now, the band managed the difficult feat of sounding ahead of their time and entirely out of their time, all at once.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY MARK DEMING, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

If we could award the "Most Powerful Garage/Heavy Metal/Psych album ever recorded" medal to an album, this one would be a mighty strong contender. The band sounds as if they’d just entered the studio, tapes started rolling and that was it. Iggy appears to have spewed out what sounds like a long-simmering vitriol and committed it to disc as-is. One can almost “touch” the existential angst pouring out from every groove and every song. The genuineness of this music simply cannot be questioned. This is Rock the way it was supposed to be in the beginning; the Rock with the capital “R”.  The album consists of eight songs, three on side A and five on side B. The side B still, some twenty years after I first heard this album, remains for me us the ULTIMATE Rock’n’Roll listening experience. Perhaps I could compare this side with John Lennon’s "Plastic Ono Band" album, just as Lennon was undergoing ‘Primal Scream’ therapy or Joy Division’s Closer, which was finished merely days before Ian Curtis would hang himself, but we can’t think of much else that would be on the same level of almost self-immolating intensity. This album is a category unto itself, a truly one-of-a-kind listening experience. Its a big cosmic vortex of pain, agony, anger, resentment, and unrequited love. SURGEON GENERAL WARNING: This is not the album for the faint of heart: You are listening to this stuff at your own risk.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has visible (and somewhat distracting) "wrinkles"(creases)  in two opposing  corners.

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
