'The Serpent Is Rising'
Wooden Nickel, USA, 1972
BWL 10287
THIRD ALBUM from this American institution. At the time of release however, the band was hardly a household name - just another struggling progressive hard rock band from America's mid west signed to a regional label (Wooden Nickle) desperate to break out of the mire. Fortunately for Styx, lots of hard road work and persistence eventually paid off but on this album it was all hands to the wheel.
Musically, its a blistering amalgam of solid hard rock and complex progressive rock with all the right moves. Produced by Barry Mraz the sound is lean, mean and solid with a chunky bottom end and plenty of James Young guitar histrionics. Brilliantly crafted songs rub shoulders with tight and bright arrangements straight out of the Yes and ELP hand book but with an American hard rock edge and an energy that suggested bigger things could well be in store if we were to stick around long enough.
A truly great and very overlooked album
Beautiful original stone Mint copy.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
