Description

DEF LEPPARD: THE DEF LEPPARD E.P.   - BLUDGEON RIFFOLA RECORDS - RED LABEL WITH INSERT

A very rare genuine original 1979 UK NWOBHM record

This is the extremely limited edition Bludgeon Riffola red label 3-track debut 7" EP with lyric / band photos insert.

This was the first release from Def Leppard and was recorded at Fairview Studios in Hull during November 1978. It's subsequently been reissued a number of times but this is the very rare first issue, which was limited to 1000 copies. Just 100 of those copies included the lyric sheet inserts that vocalist Joe Elliott had photocopied during his lunch-break at work. This copy has the insert intact and is therefore the rarest format available.

I found this record upstairs in a record shop that I took over in November 2017, so it's possible that it was sent by the band as a promotional item. It definitely doesn't look as though it's belonged to a fan who regularly played it. There's reference to an autographed copy of this EP and while the insert certainly has autographs of the band on their respective photos, I suspect that this was done before Joe Elliott photocopied them as described above.

Track details

Side One
Ride Into The Sun
Getcha Rocks Off

Side Two
The Overture

Matrix Numbers
SRTS+78+CUS+232+A   /   SRTS+78+CUS+232+B

Condition
The white sleeve has a small amount of staining and creasing and the rear top right corner is slightly lifted, but easily reparable. There is no major damage to the sleeve - see pics. The lyric / photos insert is clean with minimal creasing.

The vinyl looks at least EX, probably closer to NM with full gloss. There are a few small pressing bubbles which don't affect play and some very faint surface marks - probably from being inserted and removed from the paper sleeve. The record shows little sign of being played at all.

One side of the EP has a slightly flawed label as in the pic, but I suspect this is a manufacturing fault.

Sound-wise the record plays beautifully on both songs on side A.  On side B (The Overture) a few quiet clicks can be heard on the really quiet intro, but these soon disappear once the tune gets going. I can provide sound clips on request.

Thanks for all the offers to sell directly. However, I don't end auctions early as it's unfair on existing bidders so my advice is to bid the amount you offered and you may just win. Cheers!
