Mendelssohn & Bruch (First) Violin Concertos.

This is one of a number of LPs I recently acquired which were part of an obviously very well looked after private collection. They have never been up for sale before and condition is excellent throughout.

Vinyl in very clean condition. Very little evidence of marks around the spindle areas, and playing surfaces are generally free of mishandling marks. Visually there are some light striations on the vinyl surfaces which give the impression of being very light sleeve removal type hairlines. However, experience tells me that these are fairly common and appear to be inherent in the pressing. They are present on a few SXLs, but I have seen them most on early RCA SBs which are also Decca pressings. On some of these SBs they look pretty awful, but I have never had an LP where these marks affect sound at all. Aside from these manufacturing impurities there are just two other marks. One is a fairly long hairline, the other a tiny speck of a mark. Neither of these affect playback. On the whole both vinyl and labels still have a good gloss to them, and it is clear that this LP has not been overplayed.

Playback throughout is bright, clean and noise free. Throughout both sides there were maybe a total of eight or so of the very softest of isolated ticks, and never continuously. Doubtless these are due to static or dust, as I have not cleaned the LP (see note below).

Ricci's playing is exhilirating, and the support from Gamba and the LSO is dynamic and sharp as a tack. Amongst the finest accounts ever recorded of these ever popular violin concertos, with a Decca sound which has never been bettered, the tonal range and string reproduction is superb.

Sleeve is in unusually clean and bright condition, the early SXLs had very thin sleeves which rarely escape wear.

Grab yourself a chance to obtain what is now a very dwindling number of these early audiophile LPs which have had just one careful owner since original purchase.

Note that audio grading is subjective and based on sensitivity of equipment used for playback. In this instance playback has been tested on a vintage Technics Quartz Direct Drive SL1700 MKII turntable with Shure cartridge, Technics SU-C 03 amp and Technics SB-F2 Linear Phase speakers.

Also note that I generally do not clean vinyl unless so noted. Most vinyl will show improved sonic qualities with your preferred cleaning method, but I leave this to the prospective buyer, as controversy still surrounds the ideal method of cleaning vinyl.
