SXL 6287 Falla El Amor Brujo/Ravel Alborado del Gracioso/Pavane pour une Infante Defunte/Granados Intermezzi from Goyescas/Nati Mistral/NPO/de Burgos

Two young conductors, Argenta (who died tragically young) and de Burgos, made three orchestral recitals of Spanish music with London Orchestras at the Kingway Hall that have gone into Hi-Fi history! This is the second of the three and arguably the best. De Burgos was, and I gather, still is a great conductor with a marvellous sense of rythym (his Rite of Spring, for this reason, is one of the best in the catalogue!). The Falla is gripping, gutsy, never pompous or self-indulgent, with marvellous playing and impeccable textures, beautifully observed by the sophisticated Decca sound. The tremolando opening, swelling from pianissimo to fortissimo, once heard, is never forgotten.I think it is better than the Reiner account, and that is saying something!
