One of the lessor known Record Societies was the Parlophone MOZART CHAMBER SOCIETY, which recorded many chamber works of MOZART for the first time:

Lili Kraus (1903-1986) was born in Budapest. She began studies at the age of six. Among her teachers and tutors were Arnold Székely, Béla Bartók, Severin Eisenberger and Eduard Steuermann. At 22 she was appointed professor at the Vienna Conservatory. In the 1930s she toured widely, playing in The Netherlands, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China and Japan. At that time she also was coached by Artur Schnabel, and created a partnership with the violinist Szymon Goldberg, with whom she recorded Mozart and Beethoven sonatas. A tour of Indonesia in 1940 proved to be disastrous when she was arrested on false charges near Djakarta, and spent nearly two years in forced-labour camps. She remained in Indonesia throughout the Japanese occupation and only made her way to Australia in August 1945. The harsh conditions of her imprisonment caused difficulties for her in regaining her earlier pianistic strength. A period of intensive practising, however, allowed her finally to make her American début at Town Hall, New York, on 6 November 1949, to critical acclaim. In the 1950s she lived in Paris and Vienna, and after the death of her husband in 1956, she moved to London. During the next decade she recorded all of Mozart's concertos and sonatas. In 1967 she was appointed artist-in-residence at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, a post she held for sixteen years. Although we still view her as an extraordinary Mozart performer, her repertoire was wide and eclectic; often, her concert programmes included the works of her countryman, Béla Bartók. Her pre-war recording, made in London in 1938, of Bartók's Six Rumanian Folk Dances [20] is infectious.

Szymon Goldberg (Conductor, Violin)

The eminent Polish-born American violinist and conductor, Szymon Goldberg, played violin as a child in Warsaw. In 1917 he went to Berlin and took violin lessons with Carl Flesch.

After a recital in Warsaw in 1921, Szymon Goldberg was engaged as concert-master of the Dresdner Philharmonie from 1925 to 1929. In 1929 he was appointed concert-master of the Berliner Philharmoniker, but was forced to leave in 1934 despite Wilhelm Furtwängler vigorous attempts to safe-guard the Jewish members of the orchestra. He then toured Europe. He made his American debut in New York in 1938. While on a tour of Asia, he was interned in Java by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945. Eventually he went to the USA and became a naturalised American citizen in 1953. From 1951 to 1965 he taught at the Aspen Music School. Concurrently he was active as a conductor. In 1955 he founded the Netherlands Kamerorkest (Chamber Orchestra) in Amsterdam, which he led with notable distinction for 22 years. He also took the ensemble on tours. From 1977 to 1979 he was conductor of the Manchester Camerata.

Szymon Goldberg taught at the Yale University from 1978 to 1982, the Juilliard School in New York from 1978, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia from 1980, and the Manhattan School of Music in New York from 1981. From 1990 until his death he conducted the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo.

Pls note that I try to be careful and consistent in my grading. All records are graded with the same criteria, regardless of genre.

My grading should give you a good idea how the record you receive will look like.

Surface VISUAL GRADING:

EXCELLENT - clean and shiny, as new. E minus is the same, with some scuffing.

Very Good Plus - Clean, with a little more scuffing. Some grooves spots may have some light greying. Little if any distortion.

Very Good - a clean copy, some scuffing, some greying on some grooves or a few small groove bands. Enjoyable record, maybe light distortion on some top notes.

=> Everything up to here is a great and enjoyable record

Very Good Minus - May have areas of visible wear, may have  scuffing or dulled surface. Still a great record, but ticks, pops and some distortion.

Good Plus - a worn and scuffed copy. May have other defects separately stated. Plays well, but with noise, may require filtering.

All other defects (if any: Chips, cracks, scratches, lamination cracks, label damage, needle digs) will be stated SEPARATELY. "BUT" means that they are significant. "Faint" usually does not sound.
