Description

You are bidding on the rare LP:

Sanctified Jug Bands (1928-30)- The Complete Recordings in Chronological Order of Elder Richard Bryant, Brother Williams, Holy Ghost Sanctified Singers, released by the Matchbox Bluesmasters Series (MSE 222) in Mono in 1986.  Made in Great Britain.

*You are most certainly in for one-hell of a unique treat here.  The existence of sanctified jug bands is a very early example of the Gospel music tradition of appropriating the popular music of its time into liturgy & recording, largely associated with The Church of God in Christ.  Yes, these are literally sanctified jug bands (kazoo, jug, banjo, guitar, washboard, harmonica, etc. with congregation), but they are also something entirely different altogether.  The 13 recordings of Elder Richard Bryant & his congregation have a highly hypnotic, trance-inducing quality to them.  This is largely due to the fact that the group mostly repeats the same line over-and-over again, accompanied by free-wielding, wild screams & shouts, but there is something altogether mysterious to these songs.  This music is truly "sanctified" in that it provokes a trance-state in the listener, enabling them to lose oneself to the Holy Spirit, or whatever you want to call it.  This is Gospel music that will make you "get-down" and shake it like you've never danced before.  The combination of this trance-inducement, the inherent hipness of these songs, and the congregational shouts easily make these "proto-Funk" recordings, in a strange sort of way.  To put it simply, these recordings sound like a serious party's going on.  You may have heard the brilliant "Come Over Here" on Dust-to-Digital's "Goodbye Babylon" box set.  I can assure that the rest of the Elder Richard Bryant material is just as brilliant, strange & funky.  The two recordings by Brother Williams' Memphis Sanctified Singers feature the absolute best version of "He's Got the Whole World in his Hands" you could ever dream of.  This ain't no "Kumbaya"-esque version.  This is the primal scream.  The four recordings by the Holy Ghost Sanctified Singers showcase a more typical jug band style of this era, although there's nothing typical about these famous recordings whatsoever.  These will also induce you to get-down and dance in a very funky manner.  You might be asking yourself- who were the jug band musicians that joined the congregations on these recordings?  It's a mystery, but in his liner notes, Paul Oliver states that he's pretty sure Will Shade performs on the Brother Williams and Holy Ghost Sanctified sides.*

The Vinyl is visually graded in VG+ condition.  When looked at under a very bright light, the record shows a very rich luster and a few, incredibly light surface marks.

The Cover is still in its shrink and is graded in VG+ condition, just showing some incredibly minor edge wear.

Shipping is calculated by ebay at the actual cost for you, the consumer. I don't charge any extra fees for material or handling.

For combined shipping, please add $1 for each additional LP you purchase. If you buy many records from me, I can ship them all together in one box, and charge you the actual cost I pay at the post office. International customers, please keep in mind that once you reach 4 pounds (roughly 4 LPs+), 1st Class International is no longer a shipping option, and you must ship Priority or Express.
