This handsome LP from Eterna (820 020, German pressing, blue/white label, stereo) features conductor Kurt Sanderling and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra's magnificent account of Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 in E minor Op. 27, sumptuously recorded by DG's engineers at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin, on 29 May 1956, first issued on the yellow label later that year on LPM 18 327.
It was said that Sanderling was reluctant to re-making this work as he felt he could not surpass his first achievement and, indeed this performance must be counted among the greatest on record, a landmark in the Rachmaninov discography. [He finally did so for Teldec in 1989 with the Philharmonia Orchestra – fine though that is, the Leningrad Philharmonic rendition remains unsurpassed, boasting a frisson akin to a "live" concert.
There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Wolfgang Seifert, printed in German only. The striking cover design was executed by EB.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, more so at corners, as well as discoloration and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and whole remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback remains enjoyable. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
