Description
Fly to the Rainbow captures Scorpions at the moment their sound began expanding from shadowy underground rock into something heavier, stranger and far more ambitious. It was the band’s first album with Uli Jon Roth, whose fiery guitar work pushed Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine into an exhilarating collision of hard rock, psychedelia and progressive experimentation.
“Speedy’s Coming” launches the record with the lean attack that would eventually make Scorpions arena royalty, but the deeper cuts reveal an entirely different animal. “They Need a Million” crawls through ominous European heaviness, “Drifting Sun” gives Roth room to stretch out, and “Fly People Fly” shows the band already mastering the dramatic melodic side of its personality. Then comes the nine-minute title track—a hypnotic, slow-burning guitar voyage that ranks among the defining pieces of the Uli Jon Roth era.
This is the Scorpions before the worldwide hits: raw, adventurous and unafraid to disappear over the horizon in search of something new. An essential bridge between the psychedelic darkness of Lonesome Crow and the increasingly focused power of In Trance and Virgin Killer.
This original US RCA Victor edition was pressed at RCA’s Indianapolis plant, identified by the stamped I within the matrix sequence.
